A question concerning the CD Rom DVD combo drive on an Alienware M5700 Model P71EN1 computer?

PLEASE HELP OUT this computer technical illiterate DISABLED PERSON with extremely limited monetary funds & ebay would have to be my place for a replacement part.

I was given a Alienware M5700 laptop computer & I found that the top part of the CD Rom DVD Comb drive is missing and all there is the bottom part to the drive unit; why this is, I have not a clue why it was done. The top of the combo drive has the specs label on it, so I have no way of comparing same such with anything I find on ebay and those at Alienware pretty much refuse to assist me since the unit is out of warranty.

And the Windows O/S it came with is not loaded due to it being wiped the hard drive clean before giving it to me.

My question is, on ebay, they have several similar style disk drives, but are for the model M5500. Would the disk drive from the M5500 work in the M5700 I have?

The M5500 and the M5700 Disk Drive looks identical in every aspect including the shape, size, plug receptacle, and lock down rear bracket.

Thanks for any response.

I have asked this question before & receive only three answers, though a positive response, I never the less would like further input prior to spending the money on the part found on ebay.

The second answer from instructed me to go into device manager to find the type of CR Rom I needed, but no O/S loaded so cannot do that either; a third answer guides me to compare the specs, I do not have the top on the old CD combo with the specs label on it.

    Hi..

Before you say i am not answering your question ..

I ordered an optical drive advertised to fit an Acer model of mine .

    (I also needed a faceplate)..

The problem is the "Same model" was produced in pata and sata ..!!!

The mounting point at the back (bottom in your picture) is removable and can be used on a replacement drive.

The front of the drive currently not shown in your picture has a removable face plate..and can be used on a replacement drive.

There are two universal fitting types of laptop optical Drive.. ( See picture )...get the right one and it will fit , just add the faceplate & retain point...

    PS..

I would not personally recommend a "CD Rom DVD combo drive"...

Generally means it can read/wright CD and only read DVD....

In case you did not know you can use any make and are not limited to just "CD Rom DVD combo drive".

A DVD RW Drive can burn and read CD & DVD ...

And a DVD RW Multi drive is not limited to + or - .

And as an additional PS you can install an operating system from usb flash drive...,

If you already have an OS CD disc then use another computer to get the image on a flash drive , Alternatively you can down load the OS from on line...

Just google "install windows from usb"

If you can read the product key on the base of the laptop you can register the OS with what ever method you use.
