Catholics believe the Pope to be Christ's representative on earth. This is why their actions resemble worship when they are in his presence. They are not taught to pray to the Pope, nor do they ask him how to pray. They simply look up to him as being the closest to God one can get, and they covet his attention. A simple smile, a touch, or a wave from his hand is interpreted as being a blessing from God.
