Final Fantasy is a long-running JRPG series from a company called Sqaure (later renamed to SquareEnix when Enix bought square out.)

Unlike many other long running series, the Final Fantasy games are not related to each other plot wise. A few things are carried from game to game to give them some connection (Chocobos and a character named Cid being the most common). While the storyline's may not start that way, most of them involve a group of people brought together by chance and fate to save the world.

The Final Fantasy games are best known for being on the cutting-edge of the available graphics of their generation. Otherwise each game uses a slightly different gameplay engine, making it hard to categorize the series as a whole.

    Example:

Final Fantasy I thought III, and X use turn-based gameplay.

Final Fantasy IV thought IX, and then X-2 and then X through XIII-3 all used a hybrid real-time system. Which is slightly different for each game.

Final Fantasy XI and XIV:ARR are MMORPGS, while Final Fantasy XII is a single-player game that essentially uses an MMO engine.

In general, they are Role Playing Games which play longer than the normal game for their generation. FFI on NES would probably be a 25-30 hours game, where most NES games were 5-10 hours. FFVI and FFIV on SNES were 35-50 hours games, and they get longer with more elaborate stories as you go.

Starting with turn-based battle systems then trying new things into a more real-time-ish MMO-like battle system with FFXIII.

Each game is independent of each other, though there are some equels: X and X-2 and there XIII is a trilogy of games.

Tactics for PS1 and FFXII for PS2 are in the same "world" or "universe", but still two different stories.
