    They lost a lot of territory so the numbers are reflecting the fact that a significant portion of the population they had under the Soviet Union now lives in the breakaway states like the Ukraine.

    The Soviet Union consisted of a number of separate countries, including Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia), Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and all the Stans. When the Soviet Union broke up, most of those countries broke away from the Russian Federation.

    Abortion used as main form of birth control---causes infertility in women.

    Massive alcoholism.

    Massive smoking.

    No HIV/AIDS treatment.

    Massive use of drugs do to hopelessness.

    Terrible health care.

    Anyone with a science or engineering degree leaves the country.
