Melbourne to Sydney via Great Alpine Road: need suggestions for stop over with family and scenic route.?

We are planning to tour Sydney from Melbourne via Great Alpine Road for scenic drive. I will be travelling with my lovely wife and 8 yrs old son.

Can someone please suggest me the route where we can stay overnight too. If there is any other suggested scenic route towards Sydney, we can plan for that too.

The only glitch that I can foresee is weather, is Great Alpine road will be safe in this month?

There are various routes across the Victorian Alps and the Snowy Mountains, the Alpine Road is just one of them. Any of the villages the road passes through will have accommodation.

At this time of year, however, your major problem is going to be weather. They have already had substantial falls of snow and you can expect more. You could be lucky and have a snow-free trip or you might have to divert because of road closures. In the worst case, you could get snowed in. The alpine roads are OK in summer, although you can get occasional summer snow, but coming into winter, I would not advise it.

The coast road is an entertaining and scenic route with a lot to see and do. It's known as the Sapphire Coast http://www.sapphirecoast.com.au/

Affectionately called "Marvellous Melbourne" during the gold hurry of the 1850s, the name continues to be used today for Australia's 2nd greatest town Melbourne, a town as possible visited with hotelbye . On the banks of the Yarra River, near the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne is a contemporary area steeped in history. With vast wealth made from the nearby goldfields, beautiful buildings were built through the entire city. A number of these buildings still stand today, and Melbourne is regarded as having more types of Victorian architecture than any city in Australia. One place you can't skip in your trip to Melbourne may be the Southbank and Arts Centre Melbourne. On the banks of the Yarra River this place is just a culturally rich attraction for visitors. Southbank promenade is filled up with indoor/outdoor cafés, restaurants, and stay entertainment.
