Let it finish the updates before you shut it off. It odes that so as to not interfere when you are working on something. It will turn off automatically when it finishes installing the updates. If you keep shutting it off when it is doing that, you are going to corrupt some OS files and have to have the computer re-loaded.

Control Panel > Under System and Security click 'review your computer's status' > under windows updates click 'change settings' > click "let me choose" > Under important updates click arrow and select "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

You don't want to turn your updates totally off. You just want to take control of them. You need to find out which of those updates is hanging your computer. Microsoft pushes down a lot of updates each month and sometimes it's just too many for a computer to install at one time. This is why I control mine. So I will manually install a handful at a time (lots of the small ones together) and the large size ones I'll do one at the time. I just don't have the patience to deal with my computer hanging or flipping itself out when it gets overloaded with too many updates at one time. Thankfully this update process is only 1 day a month so it's not like it's taking some major time out of my day to handle the updates this way.
