Who is known as father of english poetry?

    That would be good ole Geoff Chaucer (Geoffrey). I think a lot of people either disagree or get confused by that because he was not writing in modern English, but he was the first poet of any note to take English, which was not considered an important language, and put it squarely on the map.

    Before Chaucer, "serious" writings in England were written in French or in Latin. That included everything from royal decrees and church and business records to literature written for pleasure. He made the Middle English which was spoken at the time into something serious, as well. No one considered Middle English much more than a spoken language of little importance until he got his hands on it and used it to write serious literature which ended up being widely read.
