@Fox is correct at one time Catholic women were expected to wear veils inside of a church in relation to the teaching of St. Paul about a woman keeping her head covered.

During the time the Blessed Virgin Mary lived here on earth she as well as all Jewish women living in Palestine (Judea) had to wear veils upon their heads. The tradition carried over with the early Christians but eventually it was only required of them when attending a Mass or entering a church.

Because of how the times had changed veils being worn by women were looked upon as something sexist as being under a man's oppression which is why it became unpopular in various societies. The Protestants were the first to do away with women wearing veils. Now even so for a time it was not required by either the Western Church or Eastern Church women still worn veils when they entered a church out of respect of the Church. It was when Protestants began to criticize the Catholic Church over women wearing veils the Western Church made it a requirement for a time but latter on the Code of Canon Law was revised and no longer were women required to wear veils inside of a church.

Corinthians 11:5, says that “Every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonours her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.”

The early Christian women veiled their heads in church and anytime they were in public and Christian women continued to maintain this practice to some degree throughout the centuries until the 19th and 20th centuries when the practice rapidly declined.

Jewish orthodox women wore veils upon their heads as a matter of culture and religious beliefs. The practice carries on today.

Probably because of what Paul said to those in Corinth, even though it was not for all. However, who knows what Mary looked like anyway? And why do we worship pictures of her?

Because Christian women are told to cover their heads by God in the NT. But most just ignore this command.

12th century Christian artists drew her that way. That's why.
