RHH: What's your favorite jazz sample used in hip hop? (+BQs)?

What's your favorite jazz sample that has been used in a hip hop song? It could be an over-used one (let's say Funky President) or one that isn't so well known.

BQ1: Who is the best representative of jazz/hip hop in the current rap scene?

BQ2: HotNewHipHop made a list of must-hear instrumental hip hop albums and if you haven't seen it, it goes like this (in no particular order I guess):

Los Angeles - Flying Lotus

The Music Scene - Blockhead

Glowing In The Darkest Night - Pretty Lights

My Vinyl Weighs A Ton - Peanut Butter Wolf

Klouds - Knxwledge

Champion Sound - Jaylib

Petestrumentals - Pete Rock

Covert Coup - Alchemist

Deadringer - RJD2

Special Herbs - MF DOOM

Shades Of Blue - Madlib

Endtroducing - DJ Shadow

Donuts - J Dilla

Your thoughts? Agree / Disagree? Which ones would you add or take out?

    Don't have one haha

BQ: I haven't heard any recent jazz/hip hop other than TPAB, so let's go with that.

BQ2: Haven't listened to the ones by blockhead, peanut butter wolf, pretty lights, and alchemist. I also agree that Cosmogramma > Los Angeles, and I think You're Dead also is better. Also, I think Kauliflowr is better than Klouds. Other than that, I agree with everything.

Probably one of the various samples of "My Favourite Things" by John Coltrane present throughout hip hop.

BQ: Currently? Probably one of Nujabes's various derivatives and bedfellows. I'm also partial to L'Orange, and I simply adore Blu's production.

BQ2: I've actually heard every single one of these, and I would make a few changes. I would say Cosmogramma is better than Los Angeles, strike Champion Sound (sorry fellas, it's a disappointment), strike Covert Coup and Special Herbs (although I would still recommend listening to them, I wouldn't say they're hip hop instrumental 'must-hears').

    James Brown =/= jazz.

To answer your question though, I guess "Today" by Tom Scott.

BQ: Supposedly Kendrick is. I wouldn't know though because I haven't listened to his recent stuff.

BQ2: Champion Sound is an instrumental album?

Probably Kiss of Life by Sade. MF DOOM sampled the instrumental of the song on his song "Doomsday"

BQ1: After To Pimp a Butterfly, it has to be Kendrick. No one else can hold it down like him. I honestly hope Kendrick continues making jazz/rap albums because that style really suits him.

BQ2: I definitely agree but Modal Soul by Nujabes should be up there. That album is slept on by many listeners.
