Why are my times faster in practice than in meets?

My coach occasionally has us do sets of 50s for time. My best stroke is the breaststroke, and I'm consistently at 35 or 36 seconds (I'm not the best sprinter; my best event is the 200 BR). But at meets when I swim the 100 breaststroke, my 50 split is never below a 38.

A 100 isn't a 50 so having a slower split is to be expected generally. In meets though nerves play a factor at my first meet for my new club I was so nervous like shaking on the block and false starting. I went a lot slower that day than in practice.
