Why do people say that the Nazis banned firearms?

Well, I mean aside from the obvious "if you do anything even vaguely like the Nazis, then you too are a Nazi! Even if it's something laudable (there were a few, hidden amongst all the awful things), like banning vivisection!" Everyone loves a Reducto Ad Hitlerum fallacy.

But what gets me is that it isn't even true. Nazi Germany actually *relaxed* regulations on firearm ownership, from an outright ban following the Treaty of Versailles and a really, really strict regulation policy when the depression started to ease up. The Nazis binned the regulation of long guns like rifles and shotguns, lowered the age at which you could own a handgun, and tripled the length of a permit to three years.

Why do people feel the need to outright lie like this? I'm not defending Nazis, you understand, more like... defending history. If you want to make the analogy at all, you should be claiming that those in favour of banning firearms are like the German government following the Versailles Treaty, which *was* doing it because it feared armed unrest. Not the Nazis, who gave guns to people like candy, by comparison. But, I guess, that wouldn't sound as good as the lie that anything you personally find bad is akin to Nazism, therefore Nazis definitely did it too.

Why do people say the Holocaust never happened? If you have enough brains to read the true accounts of history you know that Hitler banned firearms, and the Holocaust did happen. So since we know these facts, why shouldn't we say this?

Does it make brain dead liberal idiot feel better to think these things didn't happen, because this is exactly what they want to happen here in the US?

If you read the 1938 Nazi gun laws closely and compare them to earlier 1928 Weimar gun legislation – as a straightforward exercise of statutory interpretation – several conclusions become clear. First, with regard to possession and carrying of firearms, the Nazi regime relaxed the gun laws that were in place in Germany at the time the Nazis seized power. Second, the Nazi gun laws of 1938 specifically banned Jewish persons from obtaining a license to manufacture firearms or ammunition. Third, approximately eight months after enacting the 1938 Nazi gun laws, Hitler imposed regulations prohibiting Jewish persons from possessing any dangerous weapons, including firearms.

The point was, Hitler had it in for the Jews, so he first disarmed them before carrying out his murderous campaign against them. And, unable to resist, millions died. Now you know the real truth. So don't say Hitler didn't ban firearms!

The people who say that are modern fascists, and fascists have a long history of lying to advance their agenda. Another modern fascist lie is that returning Vietnam soldiers were spat on. That story did not exist before 1980, while the last soldier returned from Vietnam in 1975.Nazis in the 20s made up the same story about returning WW1 soldiers, and the successful propaganda ploy is being repeated.

And of course the big lie "Nazis were left wing", again a lie not told before 1980.

It's part of the campaign to discredit gun control in the US. The Nazis, as you note, are kind of a symbol of pure evil. So if the Nazis did it it must be wrong. Therefore, if the Nazis banned guns then gun control must be wrong. It also feeds into heroic fantasies that gun owners have of themselves as tough guys who would ultimately be the last line of defense for freedom. If some dictator ever tried to take over here then the patriotic gun onwers of America would make sure he got what was coming to him. It's a completely fantasy of course, but it's one that many of them want to believe.

Because Godwin’s Law ends an argument. Once you have called someone a Nazi, even based on fallacious evidence, the debate is going to spiral into name-calling and lose direction.
