How long should a novel be?

I'm working on a novel and I already have about 75,000 words committed to the work. I suspect the entire thing will be about 100,000 words.

Should I go back and pare it down into something more compact?

Update:

Thank you Alexa, the adult audience is what I'm aiming for!

It depends on the audience and the genre. Fantasy and things of that nature can be a bit longer. 100,000 is a bit on the longer side but it's not that bad for the young adult genre and it's a smidge long but pretty standard for the adult demographic. Also, te editing process will cause a big fluctuation in word count.

75,000 is pretty much perfect for a first timer... Jo Rowling's first Harry Potter book was about 77,000 words; so you're close.

    Good luck!
