The People Vs. God

September 30, 2009|Lou Lifson

Did you know that former Nebraska State Sen. Ernie Chambers filed a lawsuit against God? That's right: Chambers vs. God. He's suing God to stop "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts." Then, he apparently ran out of alliteration and concluded by putting God on the defensive for "genocidal wars, birth defects, and the like." God, it seems, has some explaining to do.

A district court threw out the case, though, asserting that God could not be served legal notice, so He wouldn't know that He'd been summoned to appear in court. But Chambers argued that God is all-knowing, so He would certainly be aware of the lawsuit, the address of the court, the trial date, and the time of day when proceedings were to begin. And on these grounds, Chambers is appealing to a higher court.

well I guess this question wasn't good enough to make the main R&S stream. either that or it was put under quarantine or something. only I can access it or only the people that go to my page.

OK fine. I'll stop trying to be funny.
