  • Which is worse, coming out as gay to a very religious family, or coming out as an atheist to a very religious family?

....Or perhaps one isn't generally worse than the other.

I have equated the two before. Is this a valid comparison? Would anyone from the gay or atheist community, here on Y!A, be offended with me drawing this comparison?

Christians parents or Christian future parents, which would be harder for you to handle/accept?

I don't know if it matters, but for clarities sake I will specify that I am not gay, but I am an atheist.

  • Should Christians abstain from reading holy books other than the bible?

I met a Christian who was rather adamant about getting me to read the bible. I explained I already had but he was convinced that reading it would help me find Jesus. He was convinced I wasn't "open enough" to it when I read it before.. Finally, after some pleading, I told him I would agree to reread it on one condition, if he read my copy of the Qur'an, with the same reverence and open mind that he was asking me to read the bible. He declined. Why? I then told him he could also read my copy of Dianetics, the Satanic Bible, The Vedas, The Holy Piby, or any other holy text he chose. He still declined. Why?

  • What would you do if you found out, mid-service, that an atheist was attending your church service/mass/temple that day?

I have attended several services of many religions. I think it is worth noting that I was an invited guest at all of them. Most of the time I arrived, talked with people and left with very few, if any accept the person who brought me. However, I always wondered what would happen if everyone knew. I am especially curious as to what would've happened at the more evangelical denominations of Christianity and at the Mosque that I went to. Would their reactions change?

Would you make any effort to talk to him or her? Would you leave immediately after? Would you feel uneasy? Mad? Indifferent?

Any religion or denomination feel free to answer.

    News article I stumbled upon.

    The People Vs. God

    September 30, 2009|Lou Lifson

Did you know that former Nebraska State Sen. Ernie Chambers filed a lawsuit against God? That's right: Chambers vs. God. He's suing God to stop "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts." Then, he apparently ran out of alliteration and concluded by putting God on the defensive for "genocidal wars, birth defects, and the like." God, it seems, has some explaining to do.

A district court threw out the case, though, asserting that God could not be served legal notice, so He wouldn't know that He'd been summoned to appear in court. But Chambers argued that God is all-knowing, so He would certainly be aware of the lawsuit, the address of the court, the trial date, and the time of day when proceedings were to begin. And on these grounds, Chambers is appealing to a higher court.

  • I asked a christian friend to try and convert me. short story below. What are your thoughts?

I have a christian friend who's rather passionate about his beliefs but still respects mine (atheist). We enjoy discussing each others view points and can engage in meaningful debates. I'm am normally annoyed when people try and convert me but being friends and thinking it would be a fun exercise, I gave him permission to try. Over the course of about 2 hours and after arriving at many of the logical fallacies within Christianity and me pointing them out, he was getting a bit frustrated. After some thought he end finally said that if i wanted to find god I should not seek him in the ideas of men, and I could not use logic to find him. I laughed and said I agree. I didn't really know what else to say and the conversation ended there. He helped prove my point I think. Anyone else arrive at this conclusion in a discussion with a believer/nonbeliever? Any thoughts or comments?

  • What was god doing before he created the universe?

One of the questions atheists like me raise during debates is :"who created god?" to which the response comes as he wasn't created followed by the proof quote collosians 1:17. I find this asinine but nevertheless lets assume that god didn't need a creator and continue down this road with the assumption god was ever-present. the next logical question i think would be as stated above. "What was god doing before he created the universe and earth and man and......."

  • Is the idea of god, any god, needed in today's society(ies)?

I'm looking for a discussion of the real socio-economic consequences of having a god in today's society or not. Lets try to be civil with this.
