Should Christians abstain from reading holy books other than the bible?

I met a Christian who was rather adamant about getting me to read the bible. I explained I already had but he was convinced that reading it would help me find Jesus. He was convinced I wasn't "open enough" to it when I read it before.. Finally, after some pleading, I told him I would agree to reread it on one condition, if he read my copy of the Qur'an, with the same reverence and open mind that he was asking me to read the bible. He declined. Why? I then told him he could also read my copy of Dianetics, the Satanic Bible, The Vedas, The Holy Piby, or any other holy text he chose. He still declined. Why?

It's part and parcel of the indoctrination they received. They do not want to be tempted by the Enemy (read Satan) into possibly believing in evil. Yet they cannot see how hypocritical it is to ask non-believers to do what they refuse to do.

Dianetics is not a 'holy' book. You're confusing the subject with a judeo/christian concept. Dianetics is an educational text with procedures that anyone can use regardless of religious beliefs. It is not religious.

Christians read the authentic Word of God, so that false teachings are readily identified. Sort of like US Treasury Agents; they study real currency so they can spot a counterfeit easily.

Because he probably feels he can't that's why. We don't believe in those religions or what they stand for. Certainly we would never read anything satanic. It's important that we protect our minds. You asked, so I'm telling you. Not everything in life is about being open minded. Someone could tell me to try heroin -- be open minded -- but that doesn't mean I'm going to do it because I know it's not good for me.

Paul said in Corinthians that all things are permitted but not all things are beneficial.

It's not that anyone has ever told us we can't read those books but there are some things I personally probably wouldn't do. But I also wouldn't argue with anyone that they should read the bible. People can decide for themselves if they want to read it or not. Right?

I don't really know anyone who has accepted God simply from reading the Bible. That is a part of it. But God has to open the eyes of your heart by showing you something and touching you that way. We come to know God through his word usually after we accept Jesus into our lives.

That's probably not a good enough explanation for you, but that's the one I'm offering.

There is no simple explanation. For some people their minds are closed to new ideas because new ideas are threatening to their belief system. how they see the world, or their way of life. As a Christian I see no problem in reading other religious texts.

May I quote the Bible to answer? OK, I won't. He doesn't want to be open minded, but he wants you to be.

By "being open", he means open to manipulation by him
