Is the idea of god, any god, needed in today's society(ies)?

I'm looking for a discussion of the real socio-economic consequences of having a god in today's society or not. Lets try to be civil with this.

I don't think it is. I think it's possible to dispose of all gods in a single generation. However, I don't think that's likely, so I'll take what I can get: which is more respect for the reality that can be dispassionately examined in the here and now rather than in what some iron age document proclaims to be true. If we can move the needle a bit in that direction: towards respect for science and present reality and critical thinking, then I think that can only be good. Of course science is completely incompatible with all forms of fundamentalist thinking, both theocratic and secular. Fundamentalists are people who are fully deluded and value a fantasy life in the hereafter more than they do the only reality they'll ever know in this life they're living right now. That's why fundamentalists are always the ones committing the worst atrocities... worse that sociopaths, since sociopaths (however deceitful, dangerous and hard to detect they may be) are at least reliably selfish. You won't find any sociopaths flying planes into buildings: nope. The sociopaths are the ones ORDERING planes to be flown into buildings by true believing fundamentalist fanatics.

Well is the idea of Hell, Good in your world?

God is an essential part of a Christian society. Many people like to call themselves atheist, or secular, evolutionists or just naturalist. These people try to justify evil in society, like it's part of the great design because nature does it, so it's natural to kill, steal or be sexually immoral.

After all we are a society that depends on mans wisdom, that anything to do with supernatural events is nothing more than crack pot loony's that need medical help. This is why man doesn't need any God to tell them what to do, this is how the Devil gets them to do ungodly acts like Homosexuality and abortions because we are our own God and we don't need morality and love that God freely gave to mankind through Jesus Christ, these are the ways of man. We call matter atoms, protons and electrons but what does God call them? After all he made them. But we can't even make an apple 🍎

I wouldn't say God is needed in any society, or ever was. I believe a society could function without the belief in God, but I don't think it would be preferable. Why? because it would take away individual freedom of thought.

There has been societies that have tried to impose world views, but these societies seem to stagnate and through virtue of a single world view create frustration and apaphy within their populations. no I personally prefer colour in my life.

In modern world, god is used by people to:

    1) Win arguments where evidence is lacking.

    2) Tell lies in the courts.

    3) Achieve sub human fantasies and take advantage of vulnerable people.

    4) Spend money for nothing .

    5) Evade tax

    6) Gain control on believers with inferior mentality.

    7) Provide reasons and excuses for sins they commit but those who don't want to take responsibility.

    8) Feel falsely better when reality is actually harsh.

God has always been symbolised by the sun - since before recorded history. Can we be civil and consider how our socio economic society would be without the sun?

    not to lovers of freedom.

the notion of god and religious men, means there will be people who can tell you what you can and can't do, in order to please some made up god.

really, it's just an age old lie designed from it's start to control people, take away their power, freedom and money.

Religion is in the realm of metaphysics. But it has implications on the socio-economic life of a society.

-Someone had told Napoleon that the book contained no mention of the name of God; Napoleon, who was fond of putting embarrassing questions, received it with the remark, 'M. Laplace, they tell me you have written this large book on the system of the universe, and have never even mentioned its Creator.' Laplace, who, though the most supple of politicians, was as stiff as a martyr on every point of his philosophy, drew himself up and answered bluntly, Je n'avais pas besoin de cette hypothèse-là. ("I had no need of that hypothesis.")-

-Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.- Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Yes, without God life wouldn't exist. If God were to "drop out" of relevancy, you'd drop dead.

Gods are not needed. People need to grow up and depend on themselves instead of mystical non existing creatures.
