What was god doing before he created the universe?

One of the questions atheists like me raise during debates is :"who created god?" to which the response comes as he wasn't created followed by the proof quote collosians 1:17. I find this asinine but nevertheless lets assume that god didn't need a creator and continue down this road with the assumption god was ever-present. the next logical question i think would be as stated above. "What was god doing before he created the universe and earth and man and......."

There are number of things wrong with this.

First of all God has always been. Before He is, He was, unlike you and I who were born. There is a time when you didn't exist, but before time even began, the Lord God of Israel was.

Secondly, you find it asinine when we tell you that God has always been but in order for the big bang theory to not require God, energy must have always existed so why don't you find that asinine too?

Thirdly, we don't know what God was "doing" before He created the universe, nor do we need to know. Just as you don't need to know what I am doing later today or what I did yesterday. What's it to you?

And finally, who is man to question God when man is as filthy as the dust from whence he came?

Well...according to the combination of Einstein's theory and the Big Bang Theory, time (as we know it) did not exist prior to the Big Bang. Both time (as we know it) and space (as we know it) came into existence only **after** the Big Bang.

So: it's very difficult to talk about "before the Big Bang", because we don't know if the word "before" is appropriate! It's possible (hard to conceive, but possible) that time did not exist in any form before the Big Bang.

We should also consider that a hypothetical extra-universal being is not constrained by time as we know it, which (again: relativity + Big Bang) exists only in our Universe. To be outside of our Universe is to be quite literally outside of space and time (as we know them - that is, outside of the space and time that we recognize, outside of the space and time that is a fact and requirement of *our* existence).

Conclusion: the answer to the question is much more complex than it might seem at first. It is definitely above my pay grade!

time is the measurement of movement of objects. so before the universe was created/came in to existence, time didn't exist.

so forever is a meaningless concept as is any definition of god as a being/object since there is no manifestation of said being. doesn't mean god doesn't exist. whatever is behind it all is not a knowable object.

The Bible never says that god created the universe or any planet. "The waters" preexisted the creation of "earth," small "e" earth, meaning dirt. God separated the waters to expose the dirt. The primitive, goatherd Jews who wrote the Bible thought the stars were just little tiny lights fixed to the solid "vault of heaven."

No one will ever find God through a debate. If you're not seeking God, then Christians don't really have anything they can say that will make you want to seek Him. If you are seeking answers to questions like "what is my purpose in life", Christians can give their personal experiences. But then you have to decide on your own as to what "God in your life" is worth to you.

The finite demands an infinite. One cannot get away from this.
