My girlfriend was adopted, and would like to learn where her mother is from. How can she do this?
I know it's not possible to know for sure, but I was looking into DNA testing. There are a few big services that do relatively affordable DNA testing. Basically is it at all reliable to see the general area she is from? She is most likely either Indian, or South American, or at least in regions nearby.

The Mother that put her child up for adoption has a right to privacy which is just as important and protected as your GF right to know who her mom is. Tread lightly here. If she does find out who, she may get a surprise she is not counting on as an unwanted intrusion into her bio mother life. Actually, if your GF was adopted by two loving people that love her and brought her up right., then they are her real mom and dad! Looking up the bio mom and dad may be very hurtful towards the people that took care of her since she was a baby...

By having the adoption records opened. Not by using one of those ridiculous "for entertainment purposes only" ancestry tests. Geneticists call them genetic astrology for a reason.

Birth records from the hospital ? Her adoption papers. ? She can also try DNA testing.
