    Go back to equation 1) and multiply out:

    4p - ap = 3a + 5. Now isolate all terms

    containing a on one side of the = sign:

    ap + 3a = 4p - 5. Factor out a on the left side:

    a(p + 3) = 4p - 5. Now divide both sides by p + 3:

    a = (4p - 5) / (p + 3)
