Questions about cleaning an electric oven.?

Something spilled in my oven and the oven was then used without the crap being cleaned out. So now I have burned on mess. I have heard you can put a bowl of ammonia in the oven, leave it over night and the fumes loosen the gunk for easier cleaning. Can this be done with an electric oven? Anyone have any other suggestions? I am afraid of damaging the heating element.

Yes, you can use the amonia method in an electric oven, but not gas. Ive put burners, racks, etc in a sealed bag of amonia and let sit over night. Amazing how it all wipes off.

the heating element should lift up out of the way. I would just put a wet paper towel on the baked on spots, then wipe it up. or set the oven on its highest temperature for an hour or so, which will probably reduce the stuff to ash that you can wipe out. that is basically how a self cleaning oven works.

Get some spray oven cleaner at your local dollar store, warm up the oven and spray it on.
