best fruit trees for chickens?

i have a very large chicken yard and am about to get my first chickens. i would like to plant a few trees that bear fruit in the yard so that when the fruit falls to the ground the chikens could eat the fruits and bugs they attract. any suggestions ?

We always had chickens when we lived in the south, also a sizable orchard. Seems like the chickens preferred the softer fruit - peaches, pears, plums - but they would go for apples if that was all that was there. As fluffernut said, sometimes some of them roosted in the trees, but I never saw them pecking in the trees.

Plant goji berry. All you need is one plant, and it will spread by roots. The fruit is small for chickens to eat, and not watery to make a mess. They are also very healthful. Even though they are berry bushes, the plants can become large and productive. You can contact Logee's for plants, but I am sure other places have larger plants.

Some people grow mulberries for their chickens to eat. White mulberries are very prolific and drop more fruit than you could ever pick

I'm sure they will love roosting in the trees as well. If they get into the trees will they peck the fruit? good question. I can't think of any fruit tree that wouldn't work.........I'd avoid berry plants though, they would...and do...eat those.

    Chickens won't eat that.
