would the sexuality of a character influence whether you'd read a book?
Would the sexuality of the main character (or any character) in a book influence whether you would read it or not? Or if the main relationship in the book was not a straight one (gay, lesbian, etc.)? Why or why not?
This is just something I've been curious about for a while, and I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts and opinions. Thanks!

I honestly don't know. I read the book below, knowing it was about an affair between a Nazi officer's wife and another woman. I was curious, and though I had some problems about what I was reading, I thought it was a worthwhile book. I'm heterosexual. I have homosexual friends, whom I like very much. I am uncomfortable with their sexuality, but that is their business, not mine, and I value their friendship so I don't want to break it.
I think I would read the book through if the characters were committed to their partners. I wouldn't continue reading if it was all bad language and swapping and having sex with as many people as possible for the sake of enjoying the thrill. The act has to be sacred. There has to be love.

I won't read a book if it's some story about two straight white middle class teenagers falling in love. It's always the same story with the same cliches and the same shallow first relationship soulmates kind of love. Just so overdone. I'm not a romance person but if the mc is LGBT+ I'll read it reguardless of genre. Though I've read some LGBT+ themed novels where it was clear the author was straight and drawing on stereotypes -big no no- I also get annoyed when an author throws in the "sassy/cool/fashion forward gay best friend sidekick" it's cringe worthy and cliche

Yes actually, as a bisexual female I don't like reading books where I can't really relate to the main character, especially since its almost impossible to find a book without a romantic subplot. So I can relate to women attracted to men, women attracted to men, and even on some level men attracted to me. I have a very hard time reading from the perspective of a straight man. It's just something in the dynamic from a straight male perspective that bores me out of my mind.
If the book changes perspective a lot or there is virtually no romance it makes no difference to me.

Yeah it would, but not in the way you would think. Basically, if the story took place in like the 80s or something, and the character was gay, then I might be more eager to read it than one about a straight character, because that's when they were starting to be more open about it, and this caused a lot of conflict.

It really shouldn't actually a lot of my favorite present day literary characters are Bi, lesbian, and gay. However, some of my favorites are also straight. I am a very open minded person so I like the character for who they are more than their sexuality. I suppose there might be some more close minded readers who prefer characters that are straight, but that is not the way I like to read.

It always does, of course, as a character's sexuality has a great deal to do with their development, whether it is overtly discussed or implicit. It depends on how it is treated by the author. Sensitively treated, it is possible to appreciate a variety of characters with various sexual orientations. Insensitively treated, it mars any book.

I'd /like/ to say that I wouldn't care because that's the Right Answer and that's what I /wish/ were true, but. I'm kind of a sucker for homosexual relationships, honestly. I mean. I'm bisexual-leaning-towards-homosexual, so I feel like I'm justified in preferring works that reflect my preferences, but.

The sexuality of a character wouldn't change my opinion, but if the writer did a bad job portraying it or if they just wrote the character that way to be PC I might not care for it.

I need to feel for the main character so if I didn't like the sound of him I would not be able to read the book but not because he was gay, just because he or she was not likeable. Mo

What would influence me to not read a book with a main character that is homosexual or bisexual is if the character is wrote poorly and and is a stereotype. A well wrote character, whether the character be wrote heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual, is what is most important to me.
