What is the purpose of a greatest integer function, or step function?

I know what it is and that is is written out as y=[x]. It just seems dumb and pointless. My dad tells me to not waist my time on it, but I want to find a point to it and find when it can be useful. It is kind of man made, but so is an absolute value function. The difference is that absolute value functions have many real world applications that are undeniable such as in distance and in making a variables positive or negative as |x| or -|x|. When/how/why is a step function useful and not dumb?

Postal rates and taxes are calculated using the floor function. The tax man NEVER rounds down!

Note. Your waist is just below your belly button. Don't WASTE your time!
