Alkaline refers to the pH of the chemistry. Manganese refers to the MnO2 reactant. They can be used to describe the same battery because all common dry cells use MnO2 as part of the chemistry. However Manganese diOxide is also used to make the Carbon zinc and Lithium battery types in addition to Alkaline. i suspect that the Japanese marketers are using Manganese to describe the acid paste Leclanche battery type which is how all dry cells were made prior to the introduction of Alkaline type in the 1960's
