Coup. It's a French word now assimilated into English.

"Coup" Pronounced "Coo" From the French "coup" meaning (to strike) a blow.

This meaning is hard won honors. Native Americans, in fights with their enemies, would charge at them and, instead of killing them immediately, would strike them with wooden sticks to prove their own bravery against an armed enemy.

These sticks were "Coup" sticks and a symbol of their honor and bravery, much like a king's scepter.
