First up, Super Mario Maker is NOT 30 years old. While the idea behind it may have originated back to the original Super Mario Brothers (using graph paper to design the levels... which is a VERY COMMON THING back then)... the level design engine used with the game is NEW & designed specifically for the Wii

Second, there's 4 Mario games worth of content (SMB, SMB3, SMW & New Super Mario Bros. / Wii) within Mario Maker that you can mix & match to build your levels. Nintendo has also adapted the contents of each of the games to fit within the graphical styles of all the other games in an attempt to maintain theme continuity. If Nintendo was a bit less value-centric, they could have released the game with only ONE of the game's attributes & offer the rest as DLC... but that would incite rage with others.

Third, THERE'S A COMPREHENSIVE BOOK WITH THE GAME -- Any time you have a hefty chunk of paper with a game (be it a manual or a guide), there's ALWAYS going to be increased manufacturing costs (which translates into increased prices). The book that comes with the game provides a lot of value as well.

Fourth, there's world / game creation support (so you can build a game with multiple stages. Not just one) AND ONLINE support, where you can freely exchange level designs so you can enjoy what your friends made without playing it on their system. Nintendo is also kind enough to foot the cost of the online support for everybody INSTEAD of making it a monthly subscription service. If it causes the overall cost of the game to be a bit higher, it's well worth it in terms of value.

If you don't like the game nor the price point, you can go elsewhere... Other gaming making engines, like RPG Maker VX Ace (available on Steam) is running about the same price point & that software is pushing 3 years old, isn't as user friendly AND is NOT an all-in-one bundle (as there's a crapload of DLC available for it, easily pushing the cost of it over the $500... less any sales Steam is doing for it).

Hope this gives you some perspective.

Watch the Nintendo World Championship where they had to play Mario Maker. It looks like it's worth every penny in my opinion.
