Why is circumnavigation such an important point for earth to be round?

Circumnavigation is such an important point because god commanded us to circumnavigate our baby boys.

You are a clever B. You can do the same thing around your cellphone in whichever way & end up at the same point.

If Earth is flat like a cellphone, it implies that we are all on the same face & can't go, sail or fly to the other side as we are supposed to fall off the edge. The flat model implies that the gravitational attraction is not at the center of the plane or flat form.

But if you concede that your flat Earth has Gravity too, then it is not very much different from some almost flat Asteroids.

The center of gravity too, is a point for consideration and that is the one that shapes the Earth as a Sphere.

The act of being able to circumnavigate the Earth in any direction is just one more piece of evidence that Earth's surface is everywhere connected.

Thus, if someone tries to sell us the idea that Earth's surface is NOT everywhere connected (for example, a flat Earth supported by elephants, standing on turtles, standing on more turtles... with turtles all the way down), then we know they are wrong.

Circumnavigation (by itself) is not proof of sphericity. However, it is proof of connectivity in all directions (a necessary but not sufficient condition).

The contrapositive is the useful tool in this case: if you could prove that circumnavigation is impossible, THEN you would have proven the Earth is NOT a sphere.

It isn't. Educated people have known the earth was sphere for a very long time. Circumnavigation was exploration and had nothing to do with "proving" the earth is roughly spherical.

Your example is ludicrous. It would mean the laws of gravity would be wrong. Good luck showing that.

If the earth wasn't round, gravity would pull us on the side when not at the center. Imagine the earth as a disk. When at its center, everything is normal. But when moving towards an edge, you will need to climb higher and higher, as gravity pulls you toward the center of the mass of the earth. Near its edge, you would actually need to climb vertically. Once on the edge, it would feel flat but then, on the other side, you will have to climb down very steep, the less and less, until you come to the center of the other side when it will feels normal.

The Flat Earth Society has this explanation that the earth is a mass-less disk that is in constant acceleration of one G.

I see what you are getting at, but you have the wrong idea. Your phone is "round" in the sense that all sides are connected.

The whole idea behind "the earth is flat" means that you could literally fall off the edge of the Earth. Imagine rolling a ball across a table. It will eventually fall off.

"flat" simply means "one plane". People used to think you could fall off the edge. Circumventing the world proved that you, in fact, could not fall off the edge of the Earth.

because when you come to the edge of the iphone you fall OFF the iphone NOT slide around and back under onto the back of the iphone. Your example is FAULTY
