How to cash my check?

I'm 17 in Massachusetts. Yesterday I got my first paycheck for $605 and I want to cash it.

I recently moved to Boston so I don't have a savings account here like I did in my other town. There's a bank right down the street.

I want to either cash it and just get the money or make a savings account. Regardless I just need a way to get the money, but I don't want my father or grandmother involved with it because I am afraid they will take it.

The short answer is most of the time they don't. A check cashing business is essentially making very high risk short term loans. It may not seem like much but if you charge someone 2.5% to cash a check, some charge more, and the check clears in two days that's an effective yearly rate of over 8000%. They can afford some losses. In the case you mentioned I believe if the lady recieved her cash from the check cashing place and then the check was denied she owes the check cashing place, especially if she also cashed the second check. The person presenting the check is ultimately responsable for the checks value. She would have a case against the insurance company for any fees she had to pay for the returned check but she owes the check cashing place for the money they didn't receive. They will go to court and they will get a judgement. and if someone decides that she knew the check was going to have a stop payment on it she could go to jail.

Go into the bank down the street and tell them your problem. Ask if you can open an account and even

have your paychecks deposited there by your employer.

If you are able to accomplish this, do not have any pertinent info regarding the account laying around so

    they can use it.

If the bank does not accommodate you, ask if you could acquire a credit/debit card which you would deposit

your pays onto. You would have a secret PIN which you would keep secret.

Your only other recourse would be to ask the bank to cash your check each payday until they will allow you

    to open an account.
