How much did you have saved before first moving out?

I m 19 years old and currently work as a preschool teacher making about $10.50 an hour. I currently live at home with my parents, but they are planning to move to Arizona (we live in a small town in central Ohio). My boyfriend has a job and we are planning on moving in together sometime in the near future, but I was trying to figure out how much money I should have saved up before I move out. I currently have $2400 in savings and $70 in checking. Any extra advice on moving out would be much appreciated

You do not have near enough of a cushion. If you want your own place, you are going to have to come up with first and last month 's rent and a security deposit, which is usually anywhere from $500 to $1200 but can vary more. As a first time utility account holder, the electric and/or gas company and water company are going to require a deposit, usually around $300 each but, that varies too. What is cheap rent in your area? $800 a month? Add it up. Then figure that you should have one full year of income saved in case of an emergency, such as losing your job. Experts recommend 1 year to 1 1/2 years of savings. You have barely enough to just cover the rent and security deposit. Perhaps, you might consider sharing a place with a friend.

I had $50 but it was 1966 and I got a ride to the city and had friends I could stay with until I got a job so no cost without a car or any other obligations. I landed a job as a housekeeper so got free food with the family I took care of.

Maybe you could make arrangements with your parents to let you keep living where you are now after they move away. An apartment is not really home. Home is where the heart is. But if your boyfriend moves in with you, and you break up in the future, it could be a problem, if he has no place to move to.
