Is Jockey Club the only thoroughbred registry?

I am thinking about breeding my 8 yr old OTTB. Is Jockey club the only place to register a foal and if so does that horse have to race

Jockey Club is THE ONLY thoroughbred horse registry in the US, and if she is OTTB then she is all ready registered, and as long as you breed to a registered JC sire, then your foal will be eligible for JC registry.

You might have a challenge getting her papers if you don't have them all ready.

If you choose to breed to a REGISTERED draft horse or a REGISTERED warmblood, there are also groups that will register that foal (again, assuming you have papers).

The Arabian registry will also accept half arabs, if you want to go that route.

And of course Pinto club will accept a colored baby.

AQHA will accept the offspring of a registered TB, as an Appendix too!

So you've got lots of options depending on what you breed to.

The Jockey Club is the only thoroughbred registry in the US.

The foal does NOT have to be raced. Actually, most never make it to a racetrack - they're not athletic enough and are sold to pleasure people and for eventers, jumpers, etc.

As Missy B said, there are lots of other options. Be sure to check them out thoroughly; some have some strange requirements.

If you don't have the Jockey Club papers on the mare, you're unlikely to be able to get them. You'd have to track down the last owner who had them and BUY them from him - which may cost more than the mare did.

You may be able to register the foal and have the mare in the main mare book (approved to be cross bred wth warmbloods) International Sport Horse Registry. ISR/Oldenburg not to be confused with the Oldenburg registry.
