I have a 1988 ford ranger 4wd 5sp manual. I am wondering how easy it would be to drop a 351 v8 in it. Will it bolt up to the 5sp in it?

Actually the engine swap is doable, just use a 302 swap kit (they make them for this application). The torque of the 351W will kill any stock transmission the 1988 Ranger came with. You probably have an M5OD-R1. You can see about having it rebuilt and beefed up or try to get one of the ZF transmissions used in the F-250/350 of that era.
