MMA question?
Hi guys,
I have a MMA gym close to me, and am considering joining, I noticed that they do participate in local competitions for example grappling gi and no gi / Muay Thai, and semi as well as full contact MMA.
My question is they say that they focus primarily on Muay Thai in combination with traditional Japanese jujitsu and standard roman wrestling and not in BJJ as they are not trained in BJJ, but they compete in grappling matches against BJJ schools. Can the combination make one a competent grappler?

That would completely depend on the school. I would suggest you ask for free trial classes and take advantage of them and then pick the student's brain. See who competes and then ask those how they fare in competition. The name of a style will not guarantee what you learn. They may not be able to say that they are teaching BJJ for political reasons and call it 'standard roman wrestling'. This is a joke if you ask me. Who knows how the Roman's fought? We know they did and that is was wrestling and historically that is just about all we know about their style from some murals and maybe some limited written records but noone kept track of their techniques. So it would be hard to argue that their techniques are wrong. This does not mean that they don't know what they are doing. A lot of teachers do things for political reasons and to keep some Hitler off their backs. I know I have done it because I don't believe in the limits organizations place on their member schools which they don't support any other way other than to tell them how to do things while I am still the one paying the rent on my school and the utilities and making sure I have enough students to cover those and on top of that organizations want their cut of my income for telling me what to do. So you can see a teacher's dilemma and if he is competing and got to put a name to what he is teaching....... I think you get the idea. Give it the benefit of a doubt and check it out. It may be good or it may just be some guy getting money from some suckers. You never can tell just by looking at some style name.
