Foreigner safety in Central America?

First, sorry in advance if this comes off as racist. That is not my intention.

I plan on teaching English courses in Central America in a few years (or Mexico, depending on whether I can convince my family to move to the border).

While I like to think I'm not high on anyone's "rape list," I am still concerned about my relative safety as a lone female in a foreign country.

My research has led me to believe that Mexican authority, at least, is pretty apathetic towards rape, and certain places are run by drug cartels. How much of this is true, I'm not sure, since it's really just me using Google and wading through racist tirades and articles about Donald Trump.

So I figured I'd ask here, where I could at least get some answers from someone who lives/lived there.

What's the relative safety of an American in any of the Spanish-speaking countries?

As a Black female, can I expect more, less, or the same amount of harassment as others, foreign or national?

Being that I will likely come off as single (am married, but I lose rings like crazy, and he's not likely to leave the country), what prejudices might I encounter?
