The elasticity of materials is at the bottom of sound transmission through them, and elasticity is a manifestation of the electromagnetic force.

    Electromagnetic.

Atoms (and molecules) of the medium are being pushed forward (compression wave) and the negative electromagnetic field of their electrons is pushing against the electron cloud of the next "row" of molecules, causing them to be pushed back... agsinst the next row beyond that, and so on.

This is how the energy of the sound is carried through the medium.

The atoms or molecules themselves do not travel, only the energy - it gets passed on from molecule to molecule via the electron repulsion.
