I can think of 3 ways to spice up the game:

    1) A NUZLOCKE CHALLENGE: This challenge is designed to foster stronger emotional bonds between you and your Pokemon. There are more rules than I would like to list here, but the most important ones are:

    - If a Pokemon faints, it is considered dead and must be either released or placed in a PC Box for the remainder of the game.

    - You may only capture the first Pokemon encountered on each route. If that Pokemon faints or flees, too bad, you can't capture anymore. However, exceptions are sometimes made for duplicates, i.e., if the first Pokemon encountered on a route is one you have already caught, it doesn't count against you.

    - You may not reset or reload the game when things go awry.

    - If you black out/white out, the game is over and you lose.

I've included a link with more information in the "Source" section.

    2) NO POKEMON CENTER CHALLENGE: You may not enter a Pokemon Center for any reason whatsoever. PokeMarts are still fair game though.

    3) RANDOM NUMBER CHALLENGE: Pick 6 random numbers between 1 and 721, then make a team using the 6 Pokemon with those National Dex numbers. You may have to tweak this challenge if you pick Pokemon that are really hard to find in Hoenn, however.
