Found pregnant Chihuahua: when is she going to give birth?
Hi. A little more than a week ago, my family and I found a Chihuahua running around the streets. We took her in, noticing she was visibly pregnant. When we were sure that no one had lost her, we started preparing a whelping box. She doesn t take much interest in it, but when we wake up in the morning, it is shaped like she manipulated it. Milk can be expressed, and you can see the puppies moving around in her stomach. The vet is bringing in an ultrasound machine soon, but she might have her puppies before then. Her temperature has been at 99-100 degrees for the past several days. She s clingy, too, and has had a clear discharge. How do I know when she is going to give birth soon? Any ideas or guesses? Thank you.

There is no way to do more than guess. Take her to a Vet, she will probably need a C section to survive and then you might think strongly of have her spade.

Okay, obviously people think I haven't tried. My family and I have put her up on websites and talked to the humane society and shelters nearby. It's the law to have her on public display for 48 hours, which she was. We had her checked for a microchip. I actually volunteer at an animal shelter, walking dogs and fostering dogs and kittens. Since we are friends with the vet, she has told us to call her if anything goes awry. The apartment complexes that she was found at had been chasing her around for a while, and do not allow unspayed animals. We were actually going to get her spayed, knowing the risks of a Chihuahua birth, but we can see the puppies moving around--it was too late to be spayed. I just want what is best for her, and the vet is not in for a while. She recommended a natural birth, since this dog looks like she has had pups before. I need experienced people who can give me a guess at when to expect, so we can take care of her properly.

How can you be sure no one lost her? Have you contacted both Animal Control and the Humane Society to let them know you found her?
In fact, you should turn her over to the HS to have her pups. Even with a normal sized sire Chi's OFTEN need C-sections to deliver, and you have no idea if she was bred by a larger dog and you'd have to have surgery. That's $750 to $1500 depending on circumstances. Let the HS worry about costs, you can ask to adopt the Chi if her owner doesn't show up. You might even ask to foster the litter--AFTER it is born.
As for when: anyone's guess, but it sounds as if in the next few days. So you have to be home 24/7 to watch her. If she goes into labor and a pup gets stuck, she will need IMMEDIATE vet attention.

You need to take her to the humane society so that they can first of all scan her for a microchip and try to reunite her with her family, also she can get vet checked and they can put her into a foster situation with somebody that knows how to care for a pregnant dog and what to look for as that breed has a very hard time of delivering naturally and usually requires vet intervention. (Oh it's also the law to turn them over to animal control)

Another typical dog theif whom STOLE a dog becouse it was pregnant so they can sell the ill bred mongrel puppies. You Stole the dog. Pure and simple. You can't keep the dog, you can't keep or sell the mutt puppies. You have no rights to it at all.
By LAW you stole the dog and have to surrender it to a rescue or a shelter. Here's hoping the owner finds out you stole the dog and takes you to court

This is a great question for the vet. She needs to be examined to determine how far along she is and so you can get an estimate on a c-section as most chis need them.

Chihuahuas need a c section 90% of the time .... $1200 to $1400 just to start ...... stay on top of her health care
