What is wrong with people?

zOMG Apollo and All The Muses! Why stop at targeting just this one age group?

YouTube is chock-a-block with uploaded dreadful 'performances' by all age groups, and if you consider there are so many freely available GOOD performances of about any type of repertoire you care to name, it is clear that those who post those bad performances don't bother to listen, or if they did listen, they do not estimate their performance in comparison to those good to excellent performances.

The internet is the ultimate venue for "vanity posts," and some of those are by people who are genuinely (and perhaps justifiably) proud of their accomplishments. Regardless of the level of performance, so many of these people have 'started from nowhere,' or at least the very beginning.

Prior the availability of the internet, friends or teachers would have been gently advising those who 'are not ready' to wait to publicly present their playing until they were better accomplished and more polished. Now, there are few if any barriers like that. So we get horrid playing of music, dreadful 'compositions,' both piano and the dilettante midi creations of 'epic symphonies,' sonatas which are not in any way shape or form a sonata, ditto 'concertos,' one and a half chord new-age ditties posted as 'classical,' and perhaps the worse, people who have 'learned how to play' solely on their own and/or via tutorials on the internet... etc.

With all that is available to everyone to listen to and know 'what a good performance sounds like,' there is really no excuse, which leaves the only reason they post their playing as wanting to show off "what they've accomplished," and that very much includes those performance not at all worth listening to.

Click on: click off! If you don't like it, thumb it down if you're so inclined -- but, on a more positive note -- maybe you could even leave a bit of truly constructive criticism! There is so much available that any posting/performance which offends can be quickly passed over in search of something which satisfies you, the listener, more.

Many people are self absorbed, sometimes made worse by over-enthusiastic parents and relatives with no discernment who tell their kids they are talented when they are mediocre at best. For some this self-absorbtion lasts into adulthood. Today, mediocrity is king and anyone can be a 'star' (thank the third-rate talent shows for that). Just ignore the crud and move on.

Maybe they just know, deep down, that they aren't any good. Maybe they don't need you to tell them? Just let them live in their bubble, if they wanna sing, good on them. Sure, they ain't no Whitney Houston but that is irrelevant. Singing has been proven to lift your mood. If someone has the guts to record themselves singing terribly and upload it then they deserve appreciation. It might be the only thing that keeps them holding on. Maybe they just want approval. Maybe they just want someone to say that they're good at something. Stop being such a Debbie downer, and get some empathy. You make me really sick.

Well maybe they just aren't aware they don't play that well, but some might be proud of accomplishing something new (many adults take up piano for the first time as a hobby), and YouTube might be an easy way to share with friends and family. No real harm, but it does give others who might think it is easy to teach themselves how to play, an inaccurate representation of what might pass as good playing. As someone said, you don't have to watch. If you click on one by mistake, you can stop it immediately to find Vladimir Horowitz or someone like that to soothe your artistic sensabilities.

Nothing wrong. I always get excited when friends ask me to play the piano when they visit.

Simply saying, it's a great ego-booster for someone who didn't have formal music education.

It's just their little moment of fame & glory. They don't know any better - let them indulge in it. You don't have to watch...
