Do I have diabetes?

So I took a blood test feb 2015 and the results were 5.8a1c with a 76 mg after eating so I ate something before I took the test. I went back o test myself again but he said it's still the same from Feb since it doesn't change for a year. I'm 310 6"0. He said its normal but isn't 5.7 the diabetic level? I got 5.8

your doctor is a quack!! A1c can change in a few MONTHS!! Try to get in to see an endocrinologist or an internist! Ones at teaching hospitals are the best, but others in private practice are good too!

Some doctors do not think aggressively treating diabetes is necessary! and 30 years ago they wouldn't even test for type 2!! They just treated the "symptoms"!! Blood Pressure, PAD, liver damage, kidney damage, etc!! And if they did test the glucose level had to be way way up there like our little meters won't even register the number, just say HI This is why all the horror stories of people losing legs and arms and going blind!

    Find a new doctor!!!

As neither of the first two respondents have, apparently, grasped that you're referring to you HbA1c (A1c) level, my friend, I thought I'd add a note.

As you correctly suspect, a HbA1c level of 5.7% is the level at which pre-diabetes starts.

    A non-diabetic's HbA1c level would be 5.6% and below.

    A pre-diabetics HbA1c level would be between 5.7% and 6.4%.

    A diabetic's HbA1c level would be 6.5% or higher.

It makes no difference that you ate before you had this blood test carried out as the HbA1c test offers an 'average' of what your blood sugar (glucose) level has been like over the previous 3 months.

As you can see, your HbA1c level of 5.8% is just inside the range at which pre-diabetes can be diagnosed. Having said that, none of us here could possibly know whether you have any comorbid medical condition(s), nor know what, if any, medications you are taking. Both of these CAN have an effect on the results obtained.

SOME doctors may wish to approach a pre-diabetic range HbA1c aggressively by starting their patient on medication OR by advising on things that they can do to help prevent sugar (glucose) levels from becoming a 'problem'. Did your doctor, for instance, suggest that you cut back on foods that contain high glucose concentration, and that you take more exercise? That would be the first step.

Did you get this reading in mmol/l or mg/dl?

    76mg/dl = 4.2mmol/l, which is quite fine. I'm guessing the 5.8 is in mmol/L

A high sugar reading is normally anything over 7mmol/L (126mg/dl).

    Normal is 4-7 generally.

you are supposed to be under 6.0 so you are fine.
