If you have a laptop running Windows 8, will you automatically be upgraded to Windows 10 when it releases?

You need a legal copy of Win 7 or Win 8.1, your updates have to be installed and turned to automatic, and your laptop has to have resources capable of running Win 10. Via your windows updates, Microsoft scans your system to see if it's capable of running Win 10 and if it is then it will install the KB update that installs the "get Win 10" app on your laptop. Once you get that app, you click that, and it reserves your copy of Win 10 for release on 29 Jul 15.

But if you miss the reservation, you can still get it manually. Again, as long as you have a legal copy of Win 7 or Win 8.1, have all your updates installed, you can then go to Microsoft's website and get the free upgrade and install it manually.

Keep in mind you have ONE FULL YEAR to take advantage of this free offer. So there is no rush.

You really need to read up on Win 10. Here is the link Microsoft set up with the most common Q&A. This will at least get you up to speed

  • If you've registered your copy of Windows 8, you will have received an email with a link to the Microsoft site. If you follow that link, it puts a gizmo on your computer to download Windows 10 when it's available (and your turn) and then ask you whether you want to upgrade immediately or to set a time. If you have the gizmo, you'll have a Windows icon in your system tray.

If you haven't registered your copy of Windows 8, do it now and you can still have Windows 10 for free. If you don't, or you're using a bootleg copy, Windows 10 will cost you $119 for the cheapest version.

You'll need Windows 8.1 (upgradable for free from Windows 8) with all the latest updates (well not all, but the necessary ones), to be able to upgrade to Windows 10.

No it's your choice to upgrade to Windows 10 by reserving a copy of it.

    Windows 8: No.

You must be running a valid and properly licensed copy of Windows 8.1.

And even then, it wont upgrade you automatically - you will have to ask for it before it will upgrade you.

Automatically, no. You have to do all of windows updates, then you will see an icon appear saying to reserve your copy of windows 10, go through that process. Then when it gets released it will prompt you to install it
