    This is obviously a scam.

    1. Microsoft wouldn't have a clue if your computer was hacked

    2. They wouldn't contact you via phone, they would likely contact you via email.

    3. Even if they did know your computer was hacked, they would not bother to contact you.

This is a common scam designs to let them access your computer remotely and/or give credit card information.

I like Pooh's method of discouraging such calls. I like to put on my most mom-ish voice and ask the caller if his parents had big dreams for him, because while he wasn't a perfect kid, he was bright and likable and showed such promise, and how does he think they feel about him making a living scamming old people on fixed incomes? Does his mother cry when no one is looking? Does his father tell lies about what he does when friends ask?

They usually hang up on me.

I've heard of these. They are complete scams aimed at cheating you out of your money, or tricking you into giving access to your computer to them so they can pull personal info out of it.

If you get such a call, tell them they are mistaken because you have an Mac!

    Yes, and it's a scam.

If you want, you can hand the phone to a nearby chatty child, until the scammer gets the hint, and hangs up.

Or you can play along but make it very very difficult.

For instance I claimed I had no computers - they're against my religion. The poor idiot tried for over 5 minutes to get me back on script but I kept telling her I can't do as she asks as I have no computer.

Hang up immediately. That person is out to scam you, get into your computer and infect it with a virus, ransom ware or some other nasty software.
