Why couldn't the South just secede without a war in 1861?

    The north didn't give them that choice. Notice virtually all of the battles of the civil war were fought in the south. The north invaded the south.

    North declared war. Jefferson Davis was the incompetent leader of the Confederate states.

    Because they joined the union and the rest of the country did NOT want them to secede

    Lincoln wanted to keep the country together. He also made it clear that racism and slavery would have been still given a pass had that kept the country together. That was always his greatest aim.
