Conflicting advice on people?

I have always heard different and conflicting advice from people about how to deal with people talking bad on you. I have heard to stick up for myself, but also to just let it go. Which do you think is more appropriate for any type of situation? Is it cowardly to just let it go? Or is it more stressful to demand respect?

Both are good advice, it depends on the situation. I'm a firm believer in the mantra of "picking your battles". Sticking up for yourself and fighting back EVERY single time would be exhausting, but letting it go every time makes you a pushover. You gotta figure out what's important to you and learn where you want to draw your proverbial "line in sand."
