What kind of fastener is this?

I am restoring the case of a 1933 typewriter. The case hardware (locks, handles) is attached by means of a fastener I need to identify, locate, and purchase more of.

The fasteners have a round head like an upholstery nail. The shaft is split like a brad, and applied the same way. The heads were once chrome-plated, but have corroded badly, hence my need to replace them. The fasteners range in size from 1/4 inch (7 mm) long to 1/2 inch (18 mm) long. I don't think I could use a Chicago screw instead due to the very small opening through which they must pass.

Does anyone know what these fasteners are called and/or where I can purchase them? Thank you.

Update:

Thanks, Gramps, it's a Siedel & Naumann "Erika" model from Germany, circa 1933. I don't think there's much hope of finding OEM parts. I took a photo but Yahoo wouldn't let me upload it. I'll try the portable typewriter forum here on Yahoo and see if it's still active.

is there a name or brand for the typewriter ?? if so, then try a web search for parts for it ; otherwise you may be able to find a forum for old typewriters............photos would have been helpful
