What kind of fastener is this?
I am restoring the case of a 1933 typewriter. The case hardware (locks, handles) is attached by means of a fastener I need to identify, locate, and purchase more of.
The fasteners have a round head like an upholstery nail. The shaft is split like a brad, and applied the same way. The heads were once chrome-plated, but have corroded badly, hence my need to replace them. The fasteners range in size from 1/4 inch (7 mm) long to 1/2 inch (18 mm) long. I don't think I could use a Chicago screw instead due to the very small opening through which they must pass.
Does anyone know what these fasteners are called and/or where I can purchase them? Thank you.
1 AnswerOther - Home & Garden6 years agoWhen to send thank-you cards for early gifts?
I am in rather a unique situation, and I am not sure what etiquette would dictate for it. I will be getting married in early June; the ceremony will take place in Las Vegas and my fiance and I have built a road trip around the event.
Rather than registering for gifts, we have created a PayPal account to which folks can donate funds towards the honeymoon trip. Several people have already donated, which brings me to my question--when should I send them thank-you cards? Right now, or two months from now, after the wedding?
Also, generally when someone has given me a monetary gift, I describe what I bought with it in the thank-you card. If I should write the cards now, I'll be lacking the ability to do so. But two months seems like an awfully long time to wait to be formally thanked for something.
3 AnswersEtiquette7 years agoPros and cons of Quonset hut homes?
I am considering building a Quonset hut as an alternative to purchasing a traditional home. I am having some difficulty finding information about this type of structure--my local library system doesn't have any materials and aside from a few anecdotes from owners of these structures, Google isn't yielding much. As far as manufacturers' Websites go, I tend to take information from people who are trying to sell me something with a grain of salt.
I know there must be problems inherent to this type of structure; I'd like to know which are the most common and how these problems can be best coped with--ie. rust, structural integrity issues, water tightness and the like. Does anyone know of a resource for me? Or does anyone who has a good deal of experience with these structures have the time to make a long explanation?

The parents of a friend of mine have a print of this image, except on a black background. The friend said it terrified him as a child. I would like to know who painted the original and what it is titled. I haven't had much luck using the usual research methods. Here is a link to the only image of it I could find on the Web:

1 AnswerHistory8 years agoHow much should I charge for bake sale cookies?
Hi all, for the past few years I've been baking cookies and brownies for an annual bake sale, a fundraiser for an animal shelter. The prices are up to me. For the past two years, I've charged $3 a dozen for cookies without nuts and $3.50 a dozen for cookies with nuts. The cookies might be considered on the small side by todays "super size" standards, but are the size the recipes reccommend.
Does everybody think this is a fair price? Should I be charging more or less? Obviously, the more they cost, the more money the animal shelter makes, but if they're too expensive, no one will buy them. This is taking place in the Kansas City area. Folks around here tend to be thrifty, as prices of goods are low in this part of the country. Thanks!
3 AnswersCooking & Recipes9 years agoState of Kansas: Good tenant, bad landlord. What to do?
Hello, my domestic partner and I signed a one-year lease on an apartment in Shawnee, Kansas in February of this year. We have always paid our rent on time and we have never caused a problem. Since then, a property management company, Celtic, has taken over the maintenance aspect of the apartment building. My toilet has been leaking sewage since shortly after we moved in. It is gross and unsanitary and I'm sure it's against city code
I have called Celtic several times over the past few months; the response is generally to the tune of "oh, we'll get right on that." I recently sent a certified letter formally requesting maintenance. The letter was received but no one has contacted us and maintenance has not visited. Celtic has provided us with three different building managers in as many months; clearly they are totally unorganized. I am planning to send another certified letter in the near future. What is the next legal step, if my certified letters are being received but my issue is not being addressed? P.S.--There are other tenants in this building having the same problem. We have all agreed to pool our resources and take action as a group, if necessary. I do not want to move unless absolutely necessary; moving is stressful and expensive. The location of this apartment is great.
4 AnswersRenting & Real Estate9 years agoRecipe for a creamy sauce/salmon and mashed potatoes?
Hi, I would like to prepare some salmon fillets for dinner tomorrow night and serve them on a bed of mashed potatoes. I have heard of such a dish being topped with a creamy sauce, but I'm having trouble finding a PROVEN recipe. Is Hollandaise sauce acceptable for this application? Does anyone have a good recipe for a creamy sauce to go over salmon? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!
3 AnswersCooking & Recipes9 years agoHairstyling help for a tomboy?
Okay, so I'm 28 years old and I'm a lifetime tomboy--the extent of my hairstyling knowledge is how to make a ponytail, pigtails, or bun. I'd like to style my hair in a more feminine, polished manner, and I LOVE retro '40s stuff like victory rolls. However, I'm hopeless. I've watched many Youtube tutorials on how to do "easy" retro hairstyles and spent several hours at it--nothing. Bobby pins of all sizes just fall out of my hair.
I've tried Googling "hair styling for dummies" and the like, and I just get more of this unintelligible mess. What should I do? Is there a resource for people like me? I'd really like to be able to do a sort of "golden age of Hollywood" look. Thanks in advance!
1 AnswerHair9 years agoTips for keeping cats in apartments? Potty and leash training?
Hi y'all, I've owned cats all my life but have always lived in houses and had indoor/outdoor cats. My family will be moving to an apartment in three weeks and my 5-year-old cat Rufus, who has been an indoor/outdoor cat all his life, will have to live indoors only.
I would like to acclimate Rufus to a harness and leash so that he can still enjoy the outdoors. Does anyone have practical experience with this? Specifically, I'd like to know what type of harness seems to be the most effective and comfortable. H-style or vest-style? Or some other kind?
Secondly, the apartment is small--a tiny bathroom, 2 small bedrooms, a large living/dining area, and a small galley kitchen. None of these places are really somewhere I'd want to put a litterbox. I also don't want it in a closet where we keep clean clothes and linens. Rufus uses an extra-jumbo litterbox due to his large size (not fat, but LONG); he tends to make a mess with the smaller boxes. The large box won't fit in the cupboard under the kitchen sink. Where do y'all apartment-dwelling cat owners keep your litterboxes?
I have also been looking into the possibility of training Rufus to use the people toilet. Has anyone here attempted this? If so, were you successful? Any tips?
Thanks in advance for any feedback!

2 AnswersLanguages10 years agoWhy won't my boyfriend be intimate with me?
My boyfriend and I will be celebrating our third anniversary next month. I have been living with him for almost that long; I am 27 and he is 33. We enjoyed frequent intimacy for the first year or so, and now it has tapered off. It's not due to a lack of interest or trying on my part, however, after having been rejected so many times, my efforts have been tapering off as well. He is overweight but that didn't inhibit him before. He says he's stressed and tired, but our professional/academic lives are better now than they ever were, and our finances have finally stabilized. I am quite sure he isn't getting any on the side.
I've put on 10 pounds since meeting him, but I take good care of myself, know how to present myself, and I am not overweight. I'm open-minded, plenty flexible...hell, as I front a rock n' roll band, I make a living out of making guys want me in some way, and many do. And I know this isn't a physical problem on his part, because he gets erections reliably, he just doesn't want to use them. He just wants to snuggle and pillow talk and leave it at that. I am at a complete loss here. I try not to make him feel bad or guilty about it, but I'm very frustrated and near the point of snapping at him. I have been trying to make myself more attractive--I've been doing my hair and makeup, dressing well, moisturizing, whitening my teeth...and no interest on his part.
What should I do? Serious suggestions only, please and thank you.
7 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoGood holly cultivars for Zone 5?
I'd like to plant a privacy hedge of holly in my backyard. I'd like an evergreen cultivar that produces berries, will grow at least six feet tall, but one that is preferably not too wide at the base--our yard is narrow. I live in Zone 5 (Northeastern Kansas). I am able and prepared to train and prune it to the desired shape.
Any ideas?
2 AnswersGarden & Landscape1 decade agoWhat is it called when a doctor is no longer allowed to be a doctor?
You know, a lawyer is disbarred when he is no longer allowed to practice law. I believe that there is a similar term for doctors who have had their privilege to practice medicine taken away. Specifically, I am writing a short story set in the early 1940's, so it must be whatever term was used at the time.
