A engine that is burning oil leaving big cloud of smoke is bad due to bad valve seals?

2005 Dodge Durango 3.7 with 142,000 miles.

    Maybe. What color smoke? White smoke is coolant in the exhaust. Blue smoke is burning oil. A motor with 142k on it shouldn't be worn enough to be burning oil.

    or the piston rings are bad, even a more expensive engine repair.
