Why were Hiroshima and Nagasaki targeted rather than, say, Tokyo?
On the eve of the 70th anniversary of the first use of the atomic bomb, I've been wondering why those cities, with their high civilian populations, were targeted rather than the capital or important military installations? Also, why is it that there are thousands of photographs and personal accounts of Hiroshima but almost none of Nagasaki?

My link goes into detail why the two cities were chosen. There had been originally 5 targets shortlisted.
Kokura a centre for munitions plants.
Hiroshima. A major industrial centre.
Nigata A major port and
Kyoto an industrial centre. The article reveals why Hiroshima was chosen.
I agree the bomb on Nagasaki does not seem to have had as much publicity.
You see We and the Americans were facing a fanatical enemy who would have fought to the last man. It could have cost a million allied lives to have invaded.
The Americans had total air control. They could have easy have chosen Tokyo if they had wanted. The american bombers could fly higher than the anti aircraft fire the Japs could manage at that time.
