Unreasonable to ask that parents' dog be shipped to my place instead of staying in kennel while they're on vacation?
My parents have my favorite dog ever. I LOVE her and she seems to go wild whenever I visit, which is once a month.
My parents are going on vacation and will put the dog in a kennel. She doesn't mind the kennel; I've picked her up and dropped her off there.
My parents had asked that I take a week off and dog-sit and house-sit while they're gone. I have to work most of the time, so I can't.
I proposed that my parents send the dog to visit me. It's a 90 minute flight (direct) on United and there is a United pet program that takes care of pets in flight. The cost is the same (or less) than the kennel would charge.
My mother says no, without giving a reason. She's very controlling and wants things her way.
So...unreasonable of me to ask? If I were the dog, I'd rather stay with a family member than in a kennel.
Thanks.
In a kennel, the dog is with strangers 24/7.
With me, I'd take the dog to daycare in the morning and then again in the afternoon but would otherwise be with the dog the rest of the time. I would be able to work from home in the evenings and at lunchtime.

Yes. Shipping is very expensive, time consuming, and hard on the dog. It would be cheaper and easier for you to go there, however, if you can't then a kennel is a fine option. If it's only a 90 minute flight then the drive can't be that bad. Drive over to your parents house, pick the dog up and drive back.

The flight and all that goes with it will be far more stressful than the kennels. I don't blame your parents saying no to this. The trauma in crating a dog and being onboard for way over the 90 minutes of the actual flight just isn't worth it.

If your mom feels better with a kennel and the dog doesn't mind it, why do you want the dog to stay with you. At your place, you said you work all day so it would be alone. A kennel would provide more play time and attention.
Mom is right.

airline travel has some risks.. mom may not want to take those risks.
You are at work most of the time.. at the kennels they have staff to take care of the dogs.
Airline travel may be stressful to the dog
meanwhile, she loves the kennels, has been there before and knows the place.
Mom doesnt need to give you a reason.. Its HER dog, and HER money, she can do as she pleases.

Yes
Its their dog and if they dont want to put the dog through the stress of being crammed into a crate, shipped on a plane and subject to stress that isn't needed then you need to leave off.
your mom doesn't have to give you any reason why she doesn't want to subject the dog to all that stress. Its her dog. Not yours. You ahve zero rights to it and you have no right to demand or whine she put the dog through so much unneeded stress
The dog will be better off being boarded.
