Agender people - who have a specific sex organ and do not relate to being one sex or the other; Why is that not mental illness?
I'm not trying to be insulting, or invalidate a person's identity; However out of genuine curiosity - How is it not valid to relate such a state of mind to having a mental illness, stemming from some kind of brain chemistry imbalance?
I ask this, after reading a blog/journal by Tyler Ford who was trying to describe the situation he/she find themself in.
Do enlighten me.
I guess this is an age old battle/stigma, and public perception that trans-gendered people are trying to dis-associate with.
I find it a little disconcerting that just because I am trying to genuinely understand this, that some people may consider me as not embracing someone (just because they are different). I ask to dispel the ignorance. I ask not to shun --- but to wrap my mind around why this is considered any different than say: (I don't know...) someone with bpd? multiple personalities? bi-polar disorder? schizophrenia ? The brain is a mysterious thing. Brain chemicals play a remarkable role in who we are.

Mental illnesses make it difficult to function on a daily basis. Mental illnesses interfere with the ability to function in society. Being transgender does not make it difficult to function..... society makes it difficult for them to function. It is not an illness just because society thinks it's icky.
I'm Bipolar and I don't have an issue with identity.... I am really confused why you would attempt to put being transgender in the same box as Bipolar or Schizophrenia..... Gender is not matter of simply having the right level of estrogen or testosterone..... brain chemicals affect much about how a person thinks and feels but it has little effect on person's soul.....
I think you don't understand mental illness at all..... You are lumping them all together... BPD, Multiple Personalities (which is called Dissociative Identity Disorder), Bipolar, and Schizophrenia..... these disorders are vastly different.... BPD has NOTHING to do with brain chemistry, neither does DID. oth of those disorders are caused strictly by trauma that is experienced during childhood.... no brain chemistry involved at all..... Bipolar and Schizophrenia are very similar and are due to chemical imbalances.... it's like you are trying to lump diabetes and a broken leg together then compare them to a birthmark..... none of them have anything to do with the other and just can not be stuck in the same box.....

Because it isn't. The definition of an illness specifies that the condition has to be detrimental to the organism's continued healthy functioning. Not wanting to have sex does not fulfil that criterion.

Heterosexual people often risk stds and unplanned pregnancy just for the basic urge for sex. It is a ritualistic need that is deeply tied into the self worth of these people. Doesn't taking such huge risks when you don't even want to reproduce qualify as a form of mental disorder?

I'm not agender, but an illness means you feel sick. If they don't care, they don't care.
