They may be new to Los Angeles but designs of cycle lanes and paths is a long-running debate in the UK.

Designs like that shown are classified as 'paths' rather than 'lanes' here as the parking area effectively separates the cycle route from the rest of the carriageway. They are not popular with frequent cyclists here. While they protect cyclists from accidents which should never happen anyway - a driver running into the back of a cyclist who is right in front of them - they create serious dangers at intersections as drivers tend to disregard them when making turns, leading to collisions.

Personally I tend to avoid using them for that reason. I usually ride in the main carriageway.

Looks great, but intersections could be a problem. Cyclists would be so far away from drivers' line of sight that they might not be seen by motorists who are turning. Would present problems for snow removal in places with long winters. Still, looks like an honest attempt to improve things for cyclists

No solution is going to be perfect, you also have to work on the attitudes of motorists

Looks like it would be a real big nuisance in a very short while. They use some other thing for turning corners in California before. The were black and you couldn't see them at night that much (Or the daytime for that matter), then they'd get hit and the rider would wipe out!

No need to look. ALL bike lanes SUCK! My first time down one of these (supposed) safe & protected bike lanes resulted in a local electric utility truck making a right turn DEAD in front of me. The old "right hook". How could he see me? His vision was blocked by all the parked cars. I was hidden from his sight.
