Are you homophobic (afraid of homosexuals)? Or do you just think that homosexuals are disgusting?

The word "homophobic" appears constantly and inappropriately in the media. I think that no one is actually afraid of homosexuals, but plenty of people think homosexuals are gross and perverted. I am not saying that homosexuals are gross and perverted, just that many people think they are.

Let's try the education route again.

There are two types of linguists: descriptive and prescriptive. Descriptive linguists believe that the rules of language (including definitions) come from how they are used. Prescriptive linguists believe there are a fixed set of rules in language that must be obeyed. If you take the latter point of view, as you do if you insist that "homophobia" is about fear, then you are implicitly saying that words cannot change meaning. This is patent nonsense. For instance, in the Seventeenth Century, the word "awful" meant what we now call "awesome" or "awe-inspiring". If you believe that homophobia is entirely about fear, then to be consistent you'll have to tell your girlfriend that her new hairdo is awful the next time she asks, then be offended that she hears that as an insult.

Words change meaning. They are not restricted to the meanings of the parent language. If you disagree with this, I'd recommend you study Chaucer because you should be speaking English as he wrote it.

A phobia isn't always a fear. In this case it is an aversion, as in you'd rather avoid homosexuals at all cost just like I'd rather avoid the sight of vomit, cause I've got emetophobia.

Sometimes I have trouble understanding homosexuality being a straight man. At the same time, I also try to accept people for who they are. Nobody chooses to be gay, that's just the way they were made.

If I said to you. Your mum is disgusting.

You would respond by asking me to explain my self. If all I could offer was. "I just think she is disgusting because she is" 9 in 10 sons would punch me in the nose. For a person to have an opinion as you describe there are things that have happened to cause this. Me saying I have known other mums who were so yours must be the same just dont cut it .
